In every society, at every point in time, there has always been at least one “other”–be it based on race and ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, class, etc.<\/p>\n
What I find incredibly ironic is how the Evangelical base of MAGA thinks of and treats the contemporary “others” in the US, particularly immigrants and Muslims (and if you happen to be both, then Lord help you). And particularly given the example of Prophet Jesus, Peace be upon him.<\/p>\n
Did not Prophet Jesus, PBUH, invite a tax collector and a prostitute to be his companions? Did he not touch the lepers (and what more outcast than a leper in those days)? And did he not praise the Good Samaritan in a famous parable, though the Samaritans were viewed by the Jews as half-breed heathens?<\/p>\n
When challenged as to the most important commandments of God. what did Jesus PBUH say? “Love your God with all your heart, and Soul, and Mind….” and “love your neighbor as thyself.” He also said, in the Sermon on the Mount to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecuted you.”<\/p>\n
And yet, what do we hear today from MAGA leaders, and many preachers today, when it comes to the “other”? They are to be feared. They are to be scorned. They are to be hated. They are to be defeated, by any means necessary, essentially (certainly in a manner not to be applied to those who advocate for a final solution). This is not “Christ-like”!<\/p>\n
In the early 2000’s, a popular trend swept across the country. Bracelets with the letters: WWJD–“What Would Jesus Do”. It was to serve as a reminder to all who wore that bracelet to pause in those moments of contemplation and ask oneself, what would Jesus do. So, i ask you today, in today\u2019s political and social climate, what would Jesus do? Would he be rounding up and shipping out immigrants like beasts, while they plea to their captives for mercy, cries of desperations, the moment a dream becomes a nightmare? Would Jesus support those who propagate violence against the other in the name of patriotism, goons whose only motives are financial gain and career expediency (and in the worst of elements bloodthirst and hate)? Would Jesus peddle in stereotypes and slander, demonizing those who were different, or deemed a threat? The answer is obvious, is it not, if we are talking about the same Jesus, Peace be upon him.<\/p>\n
