Libya’s Shadow Over Obama’s Criticism

Libya’s Shadow Over Obama’s Criticism

Obama is rebuking Trump on Venezuela and Nigeria, but we all remember Libya well, Barak.

The Obama-Clinton crafted and orchestrated coup d état that overthrew Ghaddafi and destabilized the most successful country in all of Africa, whose people enjoyed an exceptional standard of living. Libya’s economy was not strapped by a central bank; interest was prohibited. Citizens enjoyed access to universal quality housing, healthcare, and education, from elementary school to college—all basic needs were provided in generous amounts to its citizenry.

And of course, the rationale, according to the narrative, was terrorism—as it always is with Muslim societies, and Muslims in general.  Nevermind the historical precedence, nor the imperial ambitions, nor the context of the Benghazi assault which they used to justify the intervention.  Instead, Hillary and Barak gloated over a successful example of regime change, of overthrowing a tyrant, and liberating a country.

15 years later, after the US-led coup d’etat, the country is still in civil war, terrorist groups vie for control at the expense of the Libyan people, who now mire in poverty and debt. This is the reality and consequence of imperialism, of global policing, of might makes right, and of “regime change”. This, especially in this current phase of Fascism, in which imperial conquest is openly discussed, with religious fervor and zero reservations, and in which Empire’s war machine is being thrust onto the world stage, from the America’s to the Middle East—even Canada and Greenland have been listed as potential targets.  When will we learn? When will we unite in resistance? If not now, then when?
